Ashes (from stove)

To save Ashes scoop them in to a metal container (metal is the beast in case there are hidden embers.

  • Good for garden

Ashes are 50 to 75 % lime,so can be used to control pH leval in soil.If you sprinkle it evenly over the garden in winter you probably won't have to lime in the spring. As a bonus, your soil will get phosporous.potash,& other trace elements..

  • Pest Repelent

Low ridges of ashes will repell slugs & snails in the garden.Circle individual plants and build embankments between the row crops..

  • Ash can traction

Box of ashes in the trunk of the car during the winter would provide extra traction for the back tires & if you get stuk a shovel or tow of ashes under the tyres will give you the grip you need to get free..

  • Stove cement

Can be used as a tough cement for patching the lining oof a wood stove or sealin joints between stove pipe & chimney

method-mix 1 quart of fine ashes with a handfull of salt and enough water to make a thik paste.spread with a trowel

  • Lye

Lye,an alkali so strong it is caustic

method-drill holes in the bottom of a wooden or metal backet or berrel-don't use plastic or aluminium.Fill the container about two thirds full of ashes & suspend it over a secound container a little larger than the first.Fill the first contaner with water & let it leach through the ashes. When alldrained out do it again so it ll be strong.

uses-It is strong so keep it of reach of children. If you come in contact with it flush the skin with lots of cold water

Open clogged drains-pour tablespoonful into the drain adda cup of hot water wait five mins run hot water to flush out lye

Stripo away old paint and varnish-Apply diluted lye with a cotton dish mop with out splashing on your skin wait few mins hose down object...
